Creating a Reference Database

Just as you should create a specific resume for the position you are applying for, you should also offer references with the same attention to detail. Choosing references may seem like a simple task -- just pick people who will speak highly of you and you are done. However, it may deserve additional thought. Consider the following when creating your reference database:
  • Consider which of your references can best discuss the traits and qualities you possess that directly relate to the job. Such individuals won't necessarily possess the most impressive job titles but may be able to better assist you in getting the position.
  • Discuss with your list of references that you are listing them. The last thing you want to do is surprise them with a call that may impact your future.
  • Make sure the information you provide on your references is clear and accurate. You want to make it as easy as possible for your future employer to find out how beneficial you’ll be to their organization.
  • Before listing anyone as a reference, be sure you know what they’ll say. Some employers may only give out employment and salary information while others may delve into more details. You don’t want to be surprised.
  • Look after your social networks. Employers may now check your Facebook or MySpace accounts, and while your account may be fine, employers may recognize friends in your network and contact them directly to gain insight on you.
  • If your references were contacted or not, drop them a thank you note or e-mail. These are important individuals in your job search, and you want to make sure you let them know you appreciate them.
Once you have established a reference network, be sure to return the favor. In this economy no one is immune to layoffs, and the people you rely on may need your help in the future. Be sure you are there for them as they are there for you.

Choosing a reference can make a huge impact on your job search. These are individuals you have the ability to select, so they need to be ones who will represent you in the most positive light possible. If they don’t, it shows employers a lack of perpetration and understanding, which can severely hinder your chances of landing a job. So make wise decisions who you select; they could be the last piece that gets you your next job.
