Create a Job: How to Create a Position Just for You

High unemployment and continued layoffs translate into an increasingly competitive job market. So what alternatives do today’s job seekers have? Job seekers can no longer afford to limit themselves to existing positions. One alternative is to take a more creative and assertive approach by creating your own job.

The key to creating a job is to first identify a problem and then become the solution. Employers hire people who benefit their bottom line . There are three ways to create a job.

1. Get an employer to create a new position for you.
If you are currently employed, but discontent with your position, or if you have been laid off from an organization, you might consider exploring the needs or challenges of other departments within that organization. Once you discover a need or challenge that you are qualified to resolve, then take it upon yourself to develop a plan providing a feasible solution to the problem. This is more effective if done in a written report format and submitted through the proper channels.

While there is no guarantee that your proposal will be accepted, it is worth trying. Remember, most employers are interested in making money or saving money, and if you can clearly demonstrate your ability to create a more efficient, economical, or revenue producing organization, you might eventually get the attention and the position you seek.

2. Create a freelance/contractor opportunity.
In an economy where there is more firing than hiring, finding a job can be more difficult than ever.  Many businesses continue to have needs that go unmet due to mass layoffs.  Because of the unstable economy and the future of their business, they are reluctant to commit resources to permanent, long-term positions.  However, this might be an opportunity for you to create a win, win situation for both you and the employer.

You will need to first determine how you can meet the needs of a particular employer.  Next you will need to convince the employer to hire you on a short-term contractual basis allowing enough time for you to complete a project for the employer and earn income for yourself.  This temporary opportunity could open doors for permanent employment once business recovers. It could also be the start of your own business. In addition, similar businesses with the same dilemma might present additional opportunities for you.

3. Start your own business.
Perhaps you have a hobby or interest that you’ve always dreamt of turning into an entrepreneurial venture.  Now might be the time to take the plunge with a startup of your own. For more and more people this is becoming a legitimate career choice. This could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Now might be the time to pursue your dreams.
