A Guide to Interview Preparation

Interviewing is a skill, and like other skills, it takes preparation and practice to perfect. Therefore, preparing properly for an interview is as important as the interview itself.

Being properly prepared will increase your self-confidence, a trait that employers are looking for in job candidates, it will decrease your fear of the unknown and it will allow you to focus during the interview. Follow the guide below to prepare for your interview, so you can outshine the competition.
  • Research the company.
Memorize important facts, so you can use these in your interview. Your thoroughness in your research will help show your initiative and will impress the employer.
  • Determine who will interview you.
Will you be interviewed by one person or a panel? Find out everyone who will be involved in the interview and determine their roles within the company. Try searching in Google for each individual’s name. You may not find information on each person, but what you do find may help you to tailor your interview approach.

  • Determine what you are selling.
You are selling your services, so make sure you know what you can offer and what points you would like to make in the interview. What are your career goals and interests? What skills do you have that would fit this job? What are your strengths and weaknesses? By determining these details up front, you will be able to quickly form responses to interview questions.
  • Conduct a mock interview.
Review sample interview questions and talk through your responses to each question. The interviewer may not ask the exact questions, but your practice session will help you to warm up your skills.

  • Plan your transportation and schedule.
Determine the day before how you will get to the interview. Will you drive, take public transportation or do you need to ask a friend to take you to the interview? Visit www.mapquest.com for directions, and consider doing a dry-run to find the building in advance. Make sure you have enough gas or the money necessary for public transportation. Also, determine the length of time to get there, and pad your time to allow for traffic and finding the office within the building. Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early, so you have time to relax before the interview.
  • Pack your interview supplies.
Print plenty of resumes that are on quality paper and store them in a folder so they do not bend. Consider bringing a list of your references that you can provide to the employer upon request, letters of recommendation or a portfolio with examples of your work. Also, take a notepad and pen, an umbrella and anything you may need to freshen up right before the interview such as a brush or tissues.

  • Pick out your clothes.
Remember to dress for success. Determine the culture of the organization and pick your clothes accordingly. If you’re unsure, err on the safe side with a conservative look such as a suit. Stay away from clothes that are too tight or short, as they may be distracting to the employer. Make sure your clothes are clean and nicely pressed.

  • Get a good night’s sleep.
Allow yourself a full night’s sleep before the interview, so that you are refreshed. Make sure your alarm clock is set and consider setting a back up.

And finally, when you get to the interview, relax!  You've prepared yourself, so let your confidence show through.
